How can a make a custom brad for an invitation?

September 11th, 2007

Question: Robin-

I am looking into making my father’s birthday invitations. I want them to be simple but at the same time decent. He is going to be 70 this year. He has been a tire man over than half his life. I thought about a car tire brad or something to hold the velum to the stock card but I cant seem to find a tire anywhere. There is everything else but that. PLEASE! I need your help. Thanks in advance.

Answer:  There are a few ways that you could mimick a tire brad.  I would take either tire stickers or an image from your computer (print it however big you wanted your brads).  I would print it on cardstock (or attach the stickers to cardstock).  Then I would use a craft glue to adhere it to the front side of a flat brad and there you would have it! To make it look more professional, you can use mod podge or spray finish (glossy would look cool).  This would protect the image and make it look like you bought one just like it.

Here are some other ideas:

1. Use tire or car buttons and sew them through the vellum and back on the invite (you can find several online and at your local scrapbooking or fabric store).

2. Use a car-shaped eyelet from here or here.

3. Take off the wheels or tires from old Hot Wheel or similar small cars and attach them with ribbon or string by tying it through the vellum or gluing them on.
