Is it safe to laminate in scrapbooking?

September 24th, 2007

Question: I want to protect my daughter hair clipping from her first haircut.  I considered laminating it.  Will this be ok or would it ruin it over time?  Any other suggestions?

Answer: As a general rule, it is not safe to laminate in scrapbooking.  Most archivists will say that laminating photos and documents is a big “no-no” due to the heat and permanance of the process, and I would add that doing hair would be the same.  Since lamination is essentially melting plastic to a surface, it probably wouldn’t be the best thing to do for hair.  I would suggest using some of our memorabilia or keepsake envelopes or even any other kind of acid free bag or pouch (I have made little envelopes and labeled them for my son’s hair).
