Cards for Heroes - making cards for our troops

April 1st, 2008

Question: I live in Rice Lake, WI. I am one of many people from Rice Lake and across the US that makes cards for our troops. In return our troops send them home to their loved ones in the States. We have a website if you would like to see all we have done. It gets expensive buying cardstock, stamps, embellishments, and anything else that makes a card special and personalized. Our group of card makers in Rice Lake were wondering if you would be able to donate any scrapbooking supplies to our non-profit organization? It would greatly be appreciated by many people.

Answer: We actually aren’t a store - just a “mall” for other merchants to list their products.  I will post your website on our site, though, for others that might be interested in your cause.

Ideas for redecorating my new scrapbook room . . .

April 1st, 2008

Question: I am new to your site, I am moving and will have to re-decorate my new scraproom, currently my room is a soft mauve (light) and pastel green accessories, (shelves etc.). I have viewed many many other scraprooms trying to find ideas and I could use your help, my daughter recently moved off to go to college and now that the “baby” is out of the house I DESPERATELY WANT my new room to be more, well I guess one might say “elegant” instead of pink, green, blue pastels. Got any ideas on a paint color that would say
“classy/daring” instead of saying, “Nursery” or “Romper Room”. LOL   Any light bulbs flashing…please let me know. I am not afraid of wild ideas, I am just stumped.   Thanks so much,

Answer:  I think redesigning scrapbook or craft rooms is so much fun!  My first bit of advice would be to take out all your favorite scrapbooking paper (or go to a scrapbooking store to check out colors/patterns).  Choose your top 5 colors and patterns and tape them to the wall of the room you are doing. Then let then stay there for a few days so that you can get a feel for what the room would be like with that color.  Once you have decided, you can take the paper with you to the paint store to match.  I also would keep a swatch in your purse, so that you can match accessories later.  Below are some of the more stylish scrapbooking rooms I have seen:

Of course, when you say daring, I would think of reds.  But red can make a room look dark unless you have some moulding or wainscoating that is a different color. I love this room and how the designer used red, but not on all the walls.

I think the “hot” colors right now for scrapbooking rooms are lime green, pink, blue/tan.  I  love how this room still looks classy, even with baby pink.  When you add hip accent colors like black and hot pink, you can make you space seem more stylish and classic.

Here’s a cute green room with French accents:

Same idea, different room:

And I love the color of blue in this room:

Uses of a blender pen

March 27th, 2008

Question: What are the different uses for a blender pen?

1.) Try your blender pen with water-based ink. First, stamp your image. Then, using your blender pen, lightly pull traces of color from the edge of the stamped image into the center to fill it in with color.

2.) Use water-based ink another way. For a different effect, scribble your marker on a piece of Styrofoam or other plastic surface. Dab at the mark with your blender pen. Now you can transfer the marker color to the image on your paper, giving it a softer look.

3.) Experiment with colored pencils. Color your image and use the blender pen to soften the marks and give it a watercolored look.

4.) Moisten chalk with a blender pen. Brush the pen onto paper, working the color into your image. The chalk will stay set on the paper and requires no extra application of a fixative.

How do you put text in a circle using Microsoft Works?

March 14th, 2008

Question: Dear Robin,

I’m trying to find a way to get text centered inside a circle, other than just the type a few words, enter,  type a few more, and just keep trying til I get it right…which is what I’ve been doing.  Some way to like do a justify…but inside the circle.  Several people have told me that ms works will do it…but my format box on ms doesn’t have the shape option.   Any ideas…I wouldn’t be opposed to buying software if it were easy to use.   Thanks for any help you can give….Debbie in NC

Answer:  I know how to do it in Microsoft Word and in Photoshop.  Word is fairly simple and there are lots of online tutorials.  I also think Photoshop is easy to use, but I have been using it for several years (Photoshop is great too for editing photos, creating brochures, digital scrapbooking, etc). As far as I could find, there are no tutorials for Works, but it might work the same as Word.

1. For Word, check out this tutorial:

Where can I find Milwaukee Brewers scrapbooking paper?

March 13th, 2008

Question: I am looking for Milwaukee Brewers Baseball scrapbook paper with their logo on it.  Or anything with Milwaukee Brewers on it.

Answer: We do have some Milwaukee Brewers stickers.  As far as I know there is no company that makes paper for them.  I would suggest using blue or gold cardstock as your back drop.  Or you could make your own paper by scanning some of your memorabilia or some fabric (here’s some),  and print it off.  Good luck!
